A 9 year old boy in rural Monroe County, Mississippi, has shot and killed his sister over a video game controller. What happened? Well, first of all, this is a case of bad parenting.
The report is that a 9 year old boy had taken a gun from his parents’ bedroom and shot his 13-year-old sister to death, after they had got into an argument over a video game controller.
The incident occurred in as the mother was preparing lunch in the kitchen.
“He wanted the controller, and I guess he knew where to find the gun,” Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said.
The boy went to his parents bedroom and found a handgun in the nightstand next to the bed. He then proceeded and shot his sister in the back of the head.
“This is the first time I’ve ever dealt with any child that was shot like that,” Cantrell said. “And I hope I never deal with it again.”
The girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, where she was pronounced dead Sunday. The case is still under investigation and authorities have not filed charges.
As sad as this story is, I think it could’ve been prevented if the parent’s had kept their firearms in safer place, somewhere that wouldn’t be so accessible to a little child.
