Nikon 18-55mm and 18-105mm Lens Review
I have seen a lot of people asking about what the difference is between Nikon 18-55mm lens and the Nikon 18-105mm lens, which are both stock kit lenses that come with most entry-level DSLR’s. Today, we will take a look at the difference between these two lenses.
One difference between the 18-55mm and the 18-105mm lens is the cost. The 18-55mm lens retails for $249.99 new, where as the 18-105mm lens retails for $399.99.
To me, the build seems to be more or less the same for both of these lenses. Of course, the 18-105mm lens is bigger and heavier, but as far as the materials used for both of the lenses, they look to be the same quality build.
Below I have two pictures that I took with one of my cameras, the Nikon D5100 so that you can compare for yourself. Both pictures were shot using a tripod with the flash off setting on.

Nikon 18-105mm lens
To me, there is not noticeable difference at all between the 18-55mm lens and the 18-105mm lens. Both are good entry level lenses and both are built good, but the question you got to ask yourself if what do you want to use the lens for?
The sharpness and image quality seems to be the same for me with both the Nikon 18-55mm lens and the Nikon 18-105mm lens. I didn’t notice any sharper images or anything like that when comparing the two lenses.
The only thing I did see in the two photos above is that the 18-55mm looks a TINY bit more colorful, but that could also have happened if I moved the tripod a bit when I put the 18-105mm lens on or if if got more cloudy outside when I took the second picture because the window is right across.
Nikon 18-55mm lens vs 18-105mm lens, which to buy?
Like I said, both would be a good entry level lens to use. The only difference I really see is the price and reach of the lenses. The build quality and image quality seem to be the same to me but if you need a little more zoom, then I would go with the 18-105mm lens obviously. However, I do think that the 18-55mm lens would have a faster capture time as there is less zoom on the lens, so less work on the lenses motors. The 18-105mm lens takes a little bit longer to focus, but other than that, both are good lenses to start off with, it just depends on what you needs are. Hope this Nikon 18-55mm lens vs 18-105mm lens review helped you a bit.
